Elaine Adams

Elaine Adams is currently the principal of Boyd Elementary School in Omaha, NE. She places high priority on parents and community relations to facilitate home/school comfort for the overall well-being and academic achievement of her students. Mrs. Adams is dedicated to building avenues for parents and community to have purposeful involvement in the schools through the recognition, development and nurturing of their gifts, talents and skill sets. Working from the belief that everyone gives a little so the students get a lot and many minds make light work, Mrs. Adams searches for the strengths in parents to build the partnerships between home and school in order to develop a culture of achievement.

As a principal Mrs. Adams collaborates with parents and community stakeholders to develop extracurricular (Extra Specials) programs that support core curriculum. Her staff holds Differentiation Conferences with parents in advance of parent teacher conferences to allow parents to share insights regarding their child with the teacher. As a staff assistant in the Office of Accountability and Special Projects she worked with the Omaha Public Schools African American Achievement Plan Parent Involvement component to build a comfort level for what she terms “historically unsolicited parents and community” to engage in and participate at school. Mrs. Adams focuses on helping schools think outside of the box to build the home/school relations that promote student long term educational vision.

Grassroots advocacies created and developed by Mrs. Adams include the Greeter Initiative which focused on the involvement of African American males. The Nia Guardian Project concentrated purposeful presence of African American women to strategically assist students with goal setting. The Griot Program was developed to build confidence and set the tone for engagement of teens of color in Omaha Public Schools to be able to give back through mentoring younger students of color. Through a parent component of the textbook selection committee, parents were nurtured through the process and provided a voting voice in the selection of instructional materials.
